Soulmates in Wonderforest

​

2023년 더 프리뷰 아트위크의 신한카드 로비 프로젝트는 홍지민 작가의 <Soulmates in Wonderforest>를 선보입니다. 조각, 페인팅, 월드로잉, 애니메이션 비디오 등 다양한 매체로 이루어진 ‘원더포레스트’는 홍지민 작가의 캐릭터들이 탄생하고 존재하는 세계입니다. 홍지민 작가는 십장생도와 같은 전통적인 민화의 소재와 화풍에 영감을 받아, 사시사철 변하는 한국과 태국의 풍부한 자연을 비현실적이지만 아름답고, 익살스러우면서도 우아한 풍경화로 표현하였습니다. 반복된 선과 패턴, 다양한 색면으로 이루어진 배경 속에서 어린 시절의 기억을 바탕으로 창조한 캐릭터들이 등장합니다. 호, 샤인, 베어킨과 같은 캐릭터들은 가상의 생명체들이지만 점점 인격을 지니고 스토리를 갖는 개체로 거듭나고 있으며, 캐릭터들이 살고 있는 홍지민의 풍경화는 ‘원더랜드, 원더포레스트’라는 하나의 세계로 발전하고 있습니다.

1983년 서울 출생. 태국 방콕 거주, 방콕과 서울에서 활동.

 

홍지민 작가는 1983년 서울 출생으로 현재 태국 방콕에 거주, 방콕과 서울을 오가며 활동하고 있다. 2007년 시카고 아트 인스티튜트 회화과를 졸업하고 2012년 홍익대학교 일반대학원 회화과 수료 후, 다수의 개인전 및 단체전에 참가하였다.

 

홍지민 작가는 십장생도와 같은 전통적인 민화의 소재와 화풍에 영감을 받아, 사시사철 변하는 한국과 태국의 풍부한 자연을 비현실적이지만 아름답고, 익살스러우면서도 우아한 풍경화로 표현하였다. 반복된 선과 패턴, 다양한 색면으로 이루어진 배경 속에서 어린 시절의 기억을 바탕으로 창조된 캐릭터들이 등장한다. 호, 샤인, 베어킨과 같은 캐릭터들은 가상의 생명체들이지만 점점 인격을 지니고 스토리를 갖는 개체로 거듭나고 있으며, 캐릭터들이 살고 있는 홍지민의 풍경화는 ‘원더랜드’라는 하나의 세계로 발전하고 있다.

 

홍지민 작가는 회화에서 드러나는 색과 패턴, 형태와 캐릭터들을 기본으로 동화, 애니메이션, 조각, NFT 등으로 작품 영역을 확장하고 있다. 지난 2022년 경주 솔거미술관 개인전에서 캐릭터를 망라하여 제작한 대형 야외 조각들을 선보여 관객들로부터 호평을 받았다.

 

 

Born in Seoul in 1983, Jimin Hong currently resides in Bangkok, Thailand, and works in both Bangkok and Seoul. She earned her degree in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2007 and later completed a course in painting at Hongik University’s Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2012. She has since been an active participant in numerous solo and group exhibitions.

Hong draws inspiration from Korean traditional folk paintings like sipjangsaengdo (painting of the 10 symbols of longevity). She represents the rich, ever-changing landscapes of Korea and Thailand in an unreal yet beautiful, whimsically elegant style. Within her works, characters inspired by the artist’s childhood memories emerge against backdrops filled with repetitive lines, patterns, and a diverse palette of colors.

Characters like Ho, Shine, and Bearkin, despite being products of Hong’s imagination progressively acquire distinctive personalities and storylines within her artworks. These characters and their surrounding landscapes are evolving into a unique and singular universe Hong describes as “Wonderland.”

Hong extends her creative boundaries beyond conventional painting. Drawing upon the colors, patterns, shapes, and characters that underpin her creations, she broadens her artistic scope to include the realms of children’s stories, animation, and sculpture. In the 2022, Solgeo Museum of Art, Gyeongju presented her large-scale outdoor sculptures which created by her characters, and Hong received favorable reviews from the audience.
